If you are going to ride a horse then you better be ready to ride,” is what any real horse person will tell you, and that means you need the right kind of horse riding clothes. Even if you are just going out for a little pleasant ride, you still need the right attire. The right kind of clothes protect you and are designed just for horse riding, which means they will protect your legs, arms, head and other areas from the horse, the brush, and the elements.

Horse riding clothes will differ depending on whether it’s western riding or English riding. Although the basic elements are similar, the styles will be entirely different. The basic riding clothes include, Breeches (riding pants, just in case you didn’t know), Jodhpurs or Jeans, riding boots, riding hat, and riding shirt, and in some cases Chaps.

Western Horse Riding Clothes

When using western horse riding clothes, you will usually either wear jeans or breeches. Breeches are tighter than regular jeans. Jeans are probably the best type of western riding pants because they don’t attract stickers, brush, prickly pears or any other sticky stuff you might find out there. If you’re riding in areas with a lot of brush, then you’ll need to find some Chaps. Chaps are usually made of leather, just like pants but they tie over your jeans. Chaps come in two types, the full length and half-length.

Full lengths are usually worn when working with animals or in heavily brushed areas, and protect the leg and keep your legs dry in wet weather. Half-length chaps are used from the ankle up to the knee and are used to keep your legs from chaffing on long rides. Western riders usually finish their attire with cowboy boots, which come in different styles, a riding shirt, which can be any long sleeve shirt (long sleeves are used to protect against the sun) and a cowboy hat.

English Horse Riding Clothes

When you are English riding your pants and horse riding clothes will be a little different. There are a couple of different types of riding pants here. There are Jodhpurs, which are fitted pants that have a cuff down near the ankles. This cuff goes over the top of a low riding boot. Another type of English riding pants are the breeches, and these are skintight and either have a zipped or a Velcro closure.

English riding boots, unlike western boots are usually long to prevent chaffing of the riders leg. The English riding shirt on the other hand is very similar to the western riding shirt. The only other difference is that in English riding the rider has a helmet, to prevent injury should he/she fall from a jump or some other mishap.

Your horse gets into the feed room and gorges on too much feed, or you toss him some lawn clippings, pretty innocent stuff, but it may also be a cause for Laminitis or founder.

Would you think that excessive walking on concrete would cause Laminitis? Well, it most definitely will! How about hay! yep, hay, especially (fine stemmed hays) and too much hay per feeding can also cause Laminitis.

Your mare retains some membranes after birthing of her foal and guess what, it can cause Laminitis too.

Dietary changes can also cause Laminitis in your horse and therefore changes in their diet should be made gradually.

Ponies and thick crested horses are more susceptible to Laminitis than other horses, who would have thought!

Well we now know that there are a number of reasons that can and will cause Laminitis in the horse. The best remedy for this condition is prevention.

Good stable management and nutritional management will help prevent Laminitis. When that lush spring grass comes in, and your horse looks longingly across the fence, let him in to graze but, limit the time your pony or horse spends eating and gradually let him eat longer periods each day for a 2 week period.

The art of candle making is hundreds of years old, and it is a true art form. There are so many ways to make beautiful candle creations and if you do get really absorbed in it as a hobby you will always be able to come up with something new.

Nearly everybody has a candle or two in their homes, and those that enjoy candles, actually often have a dozen or so.

Why would you want to make your own? Well, if you really like candles you can make them at a fraction of the price of those that you buy. You are free to choose your colors and shapes, and you can perfume them or not, and, with your choice of perfume.

Candle making is one hobby though that you don’t want to ‘just experiment’ with. Obviously you are working with very hot wax, and if not handled correctly, the candle wax can ‘explode’ and catch fire. It is what is called a ‘flashpoint’. It could be disastrous so don’t cut any corners when dealing with wax. It really does pay to read all the safety tips and know all about the wax that you are using.

It really is a very economical hobby, so don’t go looking for cost cutting by using old wax. that has been lying around the house. You never know what is in it. Use good clean wax that you have bought and handled correctly, then the chance of any problem is much, much less.

So, to help you here are some safety tips:
1. Never leave unattended wax on a stove top.
2. Know your ‘flashpoint’ of any wax that you use.
3. Always use a thermometer in your wax
4. Always use a double boiler for melting your wax as this slowly melts the wax at a safe speed. Never put the wax in a pot and straight on the heat.
5. Never have wax near an open flame, wax is flammable.
6. Always have cotton gloves handy to handle molds.
7. Keep a chemical fire extinguisher handy in case of fire.
8. Keep a pile of newspapers handy in case of spillage on the floor or bench top.
9. Wear loose clothing in case of spillage and if you get wax on your skin run it under cold water immediately.
10. Never pour molten wax down the sink – it will block it.

Candle making is such fun and you can use all sorts of containers to make candles. For pillar candles you can use milk cartons, or other waxed containers like juice cartons. If you have any old glass containers, either drink glasses or vases, that you no longer use, you can also use these, but make sure that you warm them before pouring in the hot wax.

Like any hobby, candle making takes a little to learn before you start, but there are some very easy techniques to learn in the early stages to make stunning candles.

Start with easy projects and progress through to the more difficult ones later.
