Dog Beds – Make Your Dog Comfortable

Posted by admin | Uncategorized | Friday 31 October 2008 5:06 pm

Your dog is a member of your family, one that gives undying love and devotion. Naturally, you want to treat him well, and one way to show him you appreciate his faithfulness is by getting him the perfect dog bed.

Dogs sleep over half of their lifespan. Different breeds of dogs require different sleep patterns, with larger dogs such as mastiffs and St. Bernard’s sleeping as much as 16 hours per day. With sleep being such an important part of their life, it is understandable that you, as the owner, will want to make that sleep as comfortable as possible. A dog bed will do just that for your beloved pet.

Here are some tips to follow when shopping to ensure that you select just the right dog bed:

• Consider the size of your dog. Dogs enjoy the feeling of being cuddled, so it is important to choose a bed that will envelop them. Pet beds frequently have raised sidewalls or curved designs for this purpose. Since beds come in many varied sizes, it will be an easy matter to match one with your dog’s needs. Larger dogs also weigh more than smaller dogs, and some beds may just not be the right choice if they stand the danger of collapsing under the larger dog’s bulk.

• Consider the age of your dog. Puppies and adolescent dogs have a great deal of energy and vigor so will be able to maneuver raised beds easily. Older dogs may be arthritic and find it more difficult to climb up and into a bed. Fortunately, dog beds are designed in many fashions, and cushioned beds that lie directly on the floor will be quite comfortable. For the older pet, heated and orthopedic beds are available as well to soothe and comfort the aching joints that commonly afflict dogs of advanced age.

• Consider the space in your home. Most dog beds come in many different styles, with some taking up more room than others. Designer dog beds may be fashioned as actual beds with headboards and cushions, supported by legs or on a platform. They can measure over 25 inches long and 18 inches wide for standard size up to 50 inches long and 40 inches wide for extra large sizes.

• Consider your budget for a dog bed. To meet the needs of all customers, dog beds also come in a wide range of prices. While you may wish that you were able to purchase a designer wrought iron bed frame and cushion for your canine, a price tag of over $150.00 may prohibit you from carrying through with the purchase. Comfortable and attractive dog beds for considerably less can still say, “you are loved”.

Remember that your beloved pooch will not care how much you spent on the dog bed, or how long you shopped to find the perfect one. You will rest easier knowing that your pet will sense that you love him enough to ensure his comfort and good sleeping habits.

Negativity Can Lead to Weight Gain

Posted by admin | Uncategorized | Friday 31 October 2008 4:58 am

Losing weight can be difficult and the battle can be stressful. For some of us it seems that the pounds invade our bodies almost overnight, for others the excess fat is developed over years of poor eating habits, due to an illness or simple neglect of our health. There are others still that cannot remember a time that they did not have to worry about weight or fat issues, weight has always been an ongoing problem for them.

I am sure I do not need to remind anyone of the many health issues surrounding obesity and excess pounds. That is not the purpose of this article. Instead this article is meant to remind anyone trying to shed fat and excess weight that having a positive mindset is important.

I am not saying that positive thinking will shed those pounds; it will not do that. But having a positive thought process is helpful in anything you are working at. With that being said I want to discuss goals and negativity.

When you make the decision to put real effort into losing body fat you need to begin with some preliminary steps. First, check out your general health situation. A visit to your doctor would be very helpful. Then decide what exactly you want to achieve. For instance, you should decide if there is a particular weight you are striving for or maybe a particular size of clothing that you want to wear.

Set some goals but be realistic about them. If you are a person that is wearing a size 16 dress then you cannot realistically set a goal to wear a size 6 in the next two months. But you can set a goal of losing a dress size a month. By keeping your goals at a realistic and achievable level you will be able to accomplish them. If on the other hand you try for the impossible you are simply setting yourself up for failure before you even start. That does little for your confidence in yourself.

As far as negativity goes I suggest that you limit it to only what is essential in your life. Practice keeping a positive thought process and avoiding things are stressful or annoying to you. Believe it or not your emotions have a lot to do with the way you eat and your personal ties to food.

Also eliminate negative people from your life as much as possible. Moods are contagious and whether a negative person causes you to be negative or simply stressed out neither is what you need.

Recognizing Early Menopause Symptoms

Posted by admin | Uncategorized | Thursday 30 October 2008 9:57 am

Menopause is a very natural process that women typically experience in the late forties or early fifties. However for some women menopause begins to set in a lot earlier, hitting them before their forties. This is often due to genetics, illness, medications, or certain procedures.

Early menopause can present an additional emotional strain when it strikes women trying to conceive. It is important for you to recognize the premature menopause symptoms so that you can discuss any concerns that you may have with your health care provider.

Premature menopause symptoms are largely the same symptoms that women experience when going through normal menopause and include:

- Missed periods or cycles that are irregular

- Periods that change and become either heavier or lighter than what you normally experience

- Hot flashes

It is important to note that these premature menopause symptoms are re-occurring. Having one month in which you are late, irregular, or lighter than normal may not be any reason for concern since many things can influence and interfere with your normal cycle such as stress, illness, medications, loosing or gaining weight, etc. However if they occur on more than one occasion and seem to be developing a new pattern then they may be premature menopause symptoms and you may want to discuss this with your doctor.

In addition to the traditional symptoms above, other premature menopause symptoms for some women may also include the following:

- Excessive dryness of the vaginal area along with very dry skin, dry mouth, and eyes.

- Increasing trouble with sleep, restlessness, and insomnia

- A noticeable decrease in your sex drive

- Incontinence

- Mood swings which can include irritability and mild bouts of depression

If you are experiencing premature menopause symptoms there are things that you can do to help you manage your symptoms, such as taking time out for yourself with no excuses. We are all busy, but at this important time in your life you need to buy out the time for you. Make sure you are getting adequate sleep each night.

To get sleep, block out noise and light. Try using aromatherapy spray for your bed to help you relax and fall asleep more easily at night. Or, try taking natural herbal treatments to help balance out your hormones because that is what many women turn to. So if you experiencing premature menopause symptoms it is important that you speak with your health care provider to determine what options might be available for you.

How To Catch A Cheating Spouse

Posted by admin | Uncategorized | Tuesday 28 October 2008 4:03 pm

If you have ever wondered how to catch a cheating spouse, the following method will give you an easy to get some answers. Suspecting that your partner is cheating is an awful feeling and you deserve to know the truth. Let’s take a closer look at how to find out if your spouse is being faithful.

This method has proven successful for many people. Not only have people caught cheating wifes and husbands, but it has also helped others find out that their partner was not cheating. Hopefully it helps you in what can be an uncomfortable time.

Your first step is to find a time where you can get your hands on your spouses’s cell phone for 10-15 minutes. You want to be able to choose a time where you can be confident that you won’t be caught. A good time is when they have just jumped in the shower or went out to the store and left their cell phone behind.

Next, grab a pen and paper and write down all of the phone numbers that appear on both the “incoming” and “outgoing” call lists on their cell phone. If there are certain phone numbers that you recognize and know who they belong to you can leave them off your list, however write down any phone number that you don’t recognize for sure.

Make sure to go through all of their call history in full. When you are finished, put the cell phone back where you found it and take the list of phone numbers to your computer.

You are going to be using a search feature that lets you find out who owns any phone number simply by punching in the number. You will get the name, address and other background information of who owns each number on your list. This is called a reverse phone search and will be your key in how to catch a cheating spouse.

You used to be able to get this information for free since almost all phone numbers were listed in the phone book. Nowadays over half of the phones out there are either unlisted or cell phones so these phone records aren’t publicly published.

Fortunately there are companies that pay money to obtain full records for cell phone and unlisted numbers. By using their services you can find out exactly who owns any phone number on your list. You will pay a small fee to run a search, but it isn’t expensive.

Look for a company that offers unlimited reverse phone lookups for a one-time only fee. You will only be billed once and can then do as many searches you want – both now and in the future. Since your list will most likely have quite a few numbers on it you don’t want to have to pay for each number you are “investigating”.

You will be able to see each person’s name, address, location details and other background information. This will be instantly displayed on your computer screen.

Go to http://www.easyreversephonelookup.com to run a free sample search and get an idea of how this works. Bookmark the page if you don’t have your list of phone numbers yet. I’m always impressed at how much information you can find out about someone with only their phone number.

As you have probably already guessed, when you have searched through all the phone numbers, you will be taking a close look at each name to see if there is anything “fishy” or suspicious. You might suspect that they are seeing someone in particular – is there name constantly showing up? Is there any other name that looks like a “suspect”?

Using a reverse phone search is one the first steps of how to catch a cheating spouse. You deserve to know the truth and this method gives you an easy way to get some answers.

Lewis & Clark Expedition – Did Sacajawea Voluntarily Donate Her Beaded Belt For a Fur Cloak?

Posted by admin | Uncategorized | Monday 27 October 2008 11:01 am

The place and event.

Shortly after the Corps of Discovery arrived on the Pacific west coast, it was no coincidence that several tribesmen appeared before Lewis and Clark wearing excellent fur apparel. These coastal tribes were commercially savvy. They had been trading with foreign sailors for years. They also knew what was on the explorer’s minds in addition to finding a cross-country trade route.

One day, Lewis and Clark were awestruck by a particular sea-otter shoulder-cloak worn by a tribesman. But, they didn’t have enough tradable goods on-hand to obtain it from him. The tribesman also wanted the blue-beaded belt worn by the corps interpreter’s wife, Sacajawea. Did she voluntarily give it up for that purchase?

Sacajawea teenage years.

About five years earlier, Sacajawea’s early teenage life underwent tumultuous change. As a 12-year-old Lemhi Shoshone girl living near the now Idaho-Montana border, she was captured by a party of Hidatsa warriors. From there, she was taken to a large Hidatsa-Mandan dual-tribal village near the Knife and Missouri Rivers in North Dakota, where she was adopted by a Hidatsa family. The practice of capturing children from different tribes was common among the plains tribes at that time.

During the next four years in her new home she learned the Hidatsa language and worked with the village women in their large field gardens. The Hidatsa and Mandan tribes were matriarchal, matrilineal agricultural tribes. That is, the women there owned and inherited the 20-feet-across, earth-covered lodges and the huge gardens they maintained. They also headed the large clans within these tribes, while the men attended to the village defenses and hunting needs. In fact, the women of these two tribes grew so much food, which they stored underground during the winter months, that they easily traded portions of it for needed goods from several nonagricultural tribes and from the French and English trappers passing through the region.

During these four short pre-marriage pre-motherhood years within her new tribe, Sacagawea, must have made a favorable impression on the older women there. Her adoptive mother could have been influential in their Hidatsa clan, but just how much, no one knows for sure. Still, Sacagawea was eventually given a blue-beaded belt by an influential society of the women there. According to the tribal historians, such belts were awarded to those who were industrious and, perhaps, to those who were sensible and well-grounded. The belt itself could have been three-fingers wide, with an extended section hanging down at the point of attachment.

This belt meant a lot to Sacajawea. It meant more to her than mere success through work. To her, this belt meant acceptance and accomplishment outside of her own tribal bloodline. It was a visible token of her all-around worthiness as a person, anywhere. This belt could have further inspired her to grow into a well-grounded mid-teenager. That’s when she married a French-Canadian fur trader at the age of 16. Shortly after that, in late 1804, they met the Corps of Discovery there at their village, where she gave birth to a baby boy on February 11, 1805. Captain Lewis helped with the delivery. The captains also hired her trapper husband, Touissiant Charbonneau, as an interpreter. He spoke French, Hidatsa, and Mandan, and could sign. As it also turned out, Sacagawea, who spoke Hidatsa and Shoshone, and their baby son accompanied him on this dangerous journey. Their son was less than two-months old when they departed their village for the west.

During the journey westward, Sacajawea showed substantial maturity and capability as well. Lewis and Clark praised her in their journals when she calmly retrieved floating goods from the river while the boat she was in began to capsize in a wind storm. She also supplied the corps with many wild edibles, and thought nothing of it. Additionally, she remembered the Shoshone-country landmarks and their language well. Thus, she helped immensely with the necessary interpretations when the corps arrived at her home tribe before crossing the Rocky Mountains. Furthermore, when the corps departed this village westward, she stayed with her fur-trapper husband. She and their baby son could have easily stayed there among her own people now that her brother was the chief of that Shoshone tribe. Instead, she stayed with her husband and the corps.

Back to the question.

Now, back to the question: did Sacajawea voluntarily donate her belt toward the purchase of that cloak? Although its not known for certain, she definitely could have done so at the behest of the corps mission to find a trade route, which she understood. After all, she had been watching the corps collect animal and plant specimens, pelts, and skins for several months by then. So, during that spellbinding splendid-fur-for-sale moment, she could have given Lewis and Clark the nod to add her belt to the trade package. Quietly and tearfully, perhaps? Yet, she also knew that the coastal tribes knew the corps had a vested interest in the furring industry then. That’s why these tribes could demand the highly prized chieftain beads, like, the blue ones on her belt.

Moreover, the very next day after purchasing that fur cloak, November 21, 1805, Clark noted in his journal that they had given Sacajawea a “coat of blue cloth” to compensate her for the traded belt. That blue coat could have been a heavily adorned one of very fine cloth from a military dress uniform.

Engage Your Shoppers’ Senses to Get Their Sales

Posted by admin | Uncategorized | Sunday 26 October 2008 10:54 pm

The next time you are visiting your favorite apparel store, stop, then smell! That’s right, stop what you’re doing and take a long whiff. Notice anything of interest? Chances are you’ll discover a distinct smell. Whether you have noticed it before or not, that smell is part of the store’s distinct brand, and it is part of the brand cocktail that brings you back to the store time and again. (If your long whiff wasn’t so pleasant, it might also be enough to keep you from returning-certainly the bane of every retailer!) I might even go so far as to speculate that if you were led blindfolded to the store, you would be able to identify where you were based solely on what the sense of smell told you. Smell is our most evocative, enduring, and intense sense. But it is not our only sense.

Sensory marketing is a way of describing the form and function of marketing which has as its goal to create awareness and to influence consumer behavior via the various sensory channels to the decision center, i.e. the brain. Whereas I mentioned only the sense of smell, there is also sight, taste, touch, and hearing. Sensory marketing seeks to influence consumer buying behavior through each. One of my favorite retail stores, for example, encourages the shopper to “Please touch.” When I do, I buy. The more senses a retailer can engage, the more likely a consumer is to make a purchase.

Retail thrift shops are not exempt from the benefits of sensory marketing. Done properly and as part of your store’s distinct brand, the customer can be fully engaged upon entry. Remember, however, that marketing effectively via the senses is purposive. It does not just happen. What emotion or memory do you want to evoke with smell? Will any aspect of your offering be complemented by a particular scent? What do you you’re your shoppers to experience, or remember? What about sound? Will what the customer hears in your store benefit his or her purchasing choices? A beautiful melody played too loudly will distract your shoppers. Too soft and you might as well not have music playing. Have you linked the music to your shopper demographic? Volume-correct music will have little effect unless it touches your customer. What about sight? Taste? One way or another, your customers can and will identify you through their senses.

Engage their senses and you will increase your sales. In the process, have fun!

Rus has been a chief executive for nearly 30 years. Having started several thriving retail thrift stores, he now provides consultative services to help executives transform average businesses into thriving, highly profitable ventures. New Research Reveals Stunning Facts on Macular Degeneration in Women

Posted by admin | Uncategorized | Sunday 26 October 2008 11:06 am

Previous research showed that women have a higher risk for Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD). Gender is a definitive risk factor for AMD, according to the National Eye Institute, with women having a higher preponderance of the disease.

A new study has unveiled why women have an increased risk for AMD, and how hormone replacement therapy reduces that risk.

According to the study, estrogen (a hormone that helps in the development and maintenance of female characteristics) becomes deficient in women after menopause, and this deficiency makes women more likely to suffer AMD. The study suggests that hormone replacement therapy in women after menopause can help cut the risk of wet macular degeneration, but what is unexpected is that this therapy also increases the risk of dry AMD in women.

The findings of this study reinforce the effectiveness of nutritional therapy for the prevention of AMD in women, because treatment with nutritional supplements is not only effective in reducing the risk of the disease, it’s also substantially safer than hormone replacement therapy.

The study: Facts and Findings…

The study, entitled Menopausal and Reproductive Factors and Risk of Age-Related Macular Degeneration, was published in the April 2008 issue of the professional journal Archives of Ophthalmology.

The researchers looked at the Nurses’ Health Study, and noted–in 74,996 postmenopausal women–certain factors related to estrogen, as for example, past use of oral contraceptive medicines, postmenopausal hormone replacement therapy, and so on. They noted that 554 of the women developed early or dry AMD and 334 developed more advanced or wet AMD.

The researchers found that the risk for wet or advanced AMD was 48% lower in women who received hormone replacement therapy after their menopause. However, there was a 34% increase in the risk for early or dry AMD in women who received hormone replacement therapy, an unexpected negative adverse result.

The study has therefore unveiled that hormone therapy in postmenopausal women reduces the risk of advanced or wet AMD, but it can also cause a substantial increase in the risk of early or dry AMD.

What’s Important in this Study…

The researchers suggested that oxidative stress plays an important role in the degeneration of retina’s epithelium. In women, estrogen may have a protective role against the oxidative stress on the retina and thus this hormone helps promote the survival of the retina’s epithelium. According to the researchers, various compounds of estrogen work as potent antioxidants, and act against oxidative stress.

Therefore, it becomes evident from this study that after menopause in women, there is a deficiency in estrogen, and this in turn suggests that there is deficiency in antioxidants in postmenopausal women. This antioxidant deficiency increases the oxidative stress on the retina, and thus women after menopause become prone to AMD.

What’s Next…

In postmenopausal women, when hormone replacement therapy lacks safety, nutritional therapy seems to be a justified option in reducing the risk of AMD.

Nutritional supplements act as scavengers of free radicals, thus reducing the oxidative damage to the retina; and advocating these supplements is safer compared to other treatment options, such as hormone replacement therapy.

Apart from that, other risk factors for AMD–cigarette smoking, obesity, heart disease etc–should also be taken care of, because working on these factors is important for reducing the risk of AMD in women.

Nutritional Supplements: They Fight for You…

Nutrients, with their antioxidant properties, can fight against oxidative stress and reduce the risk of AMD in woman. Additional studies substantiating the benefit of nutritional supplements to treat macular degeneration include these:

-A study by US researchers suggests that diets rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, two nutrients with strong antioxidant properties, helps prevent intermediate AMD in women aged below 75 years. The study has been published in Archives of Ophthalmology. In women younger than 75 years and without any history of chronic diseases, a stable dietary intake of lutein and zeaxanthin could substantially cut the risk of AMD, the researchers found in the study. Carrots, squash, peaches, papaya, broccoli, spinach and peas are some of the dietary sources for lutein and zeaxanthin.

-A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests that consuming smaller amount of refined carbohydrate in diet can substantially benefit persons who are at risk of advanced AMD. The study involved 3977 participants aged 55-80 years; 58% of the participants were women. The researchers suggested that approximately 7.8% of the advanced AMD cases could be prevented if the participants of the study could consume low-carbohydrate diets. Nutritional supplements–which include fruits, vegetables, fish etc–have the potential to replace the dietary carbohydrate content. These supplements can be effective in reducing the carbohydrate intake and thus they can significantly cut the risk of advanced AMD.

-Another study suggests that dietary supplementation with beta carotene, vitamins C and E, and zinc can substantially reduce the risk of AMD in elderly men and women. The study, which has been published in Journal of the American Medical Association, looked at 5836 persons, who were at the risk of AMD, and found that high dietary intake of beta carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, and zinc could reduce–by 35%–the risk of AMD in the study population.

Anorexia Nervosa Treatment

Posted by admin | Uncategorized | Saturday 25 October 2008 10:59 pm

The treatment for anorexia nervosa is often difficult and can take a long time. Some patients improve much slower then others do with many relapses during the recovery process. The treatment can be subdivided into immediate or long term anorexia treatment.

The immediate concerns of most people who present with anorexia nervosa is always low weight, nutrition balance and complications (like organs failure) due to long term starvation. All these have to be addressed first before long term psychological treatment can begin.

Some people who are a danger to themselves because they refuse to eat have to be hospitalized until they gain enough body weight to maintain their life. Many of these patients will need to have intravenous injections of highly nutritious products to replace their nutritional losses. If attempts to feed them fail they may need a tube inserted into their stomach to improve their nutritious status. The lengths of these treatments can vary depending on how the patients progress.

Long time psychological treatment should start while in the hospital. A team of professionals are normally involved including psychologists, counselors, social workers, nutritionists and medical doctors.

The team has to be very supportive and cooperative in their attempts to persuade the sufferer to take the treatment seriously and understand the importance of it. Many patients have to be forced into treatment against their desires (like emergency and life saving situations due to starvation and organs failure). This can hamper the sufferer’s willingness for treatment in the first instance; but by building a trusting and supportive relationship with a patient over time can help to breakdown this barrier.

Psychotherapy starts when a trusting relationship with the patient has been established. A number of issues have to be addressed: body image, anxiety, depression, fears, eating habits and other concerns. The most difficult one is the body image issue because the person is absolutely obsessed with being thin and staying thin. Putting on weight which is crucial for recovery can become a major fear for the sufferer that is difficult to overcome.

Personality issues, coping strategies, relationship problems – all have to be looked at in the therapy sessions with the patient.

Lots of people improve by the time of their discharge from the hospital but the treatment for anorexia nervosa should not finish there. Relapses at home after hospitalization is extremely common, over 95% of all sufferers have some kind of problem. Actually much more people do relapse than those who do not, a scary statistic for the sufferer.

And here is where research has shown that family therapy and home treatments should be the first choice of help after leaving the hospital or clinic. Research has shown now that if a person does not have good home support and family involvement in their treatment, the person has a very slim chance for recovery.

Many parents and family members have no idea what it is they are supposed to do to help: what they should say to the sufferer and what they should not. Most uninformed family members still think that all the sufferer has to do is eat, and everything will be okay: but of course this is totally wrong.

Also family members do not know what kind of atmosphere in the house they should create to support the sufferer and make her/him understand that recovery is possible. It is here that most sufferers relapse because they are normally left to their own devices, simply because no one else has the slightest idea of what to do.
